Several people, including a child, were displaced after an apartment building caught fire in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood on Monday.
City of Miami Fire Rescue said they responded to a fire at a mixed-use building at 48 Northwest 8th Avenue at around 3:52 p.m., where crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from a second-floor apartment.
Firefighters “encountered heavy black smoke throughout the floor, with active fire in one apartment and extending into the attic space,” fire rescue said.
They searched all seven residential units “which were cleared of occupants,” and the fire was brought under control within about 10 minutes, authorities said.
While no injuries were reported, Miami Fire Rescue said residents from four apartments were displaced.
They said 9 adults, one infant and one cat were receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. However, that organization later said a total of 12 people were impacted.
Additionally, a motorcycle shop on the first floor sustained smoke damage, while multiple apartments and the common hallway sustained heavy smoke damage, fire rescue said.
The Miami Fire Investigation Unit is working to determine the cause of the fire.
