One man was killed and a second was hurt in a shooting early Tuesday in Florida City, and people who knew the victim said the violence was broadcast on social media.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office officials said Florida City Police responded to a shooting at around 12:30 a.m. in the area of Northwest 14th Street and Northwest 2nd Avenue. Investigators appeared to focus on a first-floor apartment there.
At the scene, authorities found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the men was pronounced dead.
People who said they knew the victim told NBC6 that the shooting started as a robbery, and that the crime was captured during a livestream on Facebook overnight. NBC6’s Julia Bagg reports.
The second man was rushed to the hospital in stable condition.
Florida City Commissioner Walter Thompson, along with a relative and friend of the deceased victim, confirmed that his name is Carl Melvin.
People who said they knew the 45-year-old Melvin told NBC6 that the shooting started as a robbery, and that the crime was captured during a livestream on Facebook overnight.
In that footage, gunfire can be heard, followed by a 911 call in which a man says: “I got shot. One dead… Please come get me… my cousin’s dead.”
“This is a shame,” Jonathan Osbun, who said he knew the victim, said. “It’s right after Christmas, before New Year’s. It’s not something that should be happening every day.”
The second victim, 34-year-old Quentavis Lejohn Smith, was hospitalized in stable condition, authorities said.
Homicide detectives with the sheriff’s office are investigating.
