The Fort Myers Police Department has arrested a man accused of driving under the influence and causing a hit-and-run crash on New Year’s Day.

Police arrested Michael Schott, 52, on Thursday, following a crash involving a Toyota and a Ford F150 that occurred at the intersection of Winkler Avenue and Metro Parkway.

According to law enforcement, Schott, the driver of the truck, did not stop and left the scene of the crash, despite witnesses stating that the vehicle had sustained “catastrophic” damage, with the front tire missing, and continued to drive along the roadway.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office later located Schott, noting that the truck was missing its front passenger-side tire, with the axle dug into the ground due to the vehicle’s weight.

Upon inspection, police said Schott emanated a strong odor of alcohol, and refused to submit to breath testing after being read the implied consent.

He was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital for medical clearance, then arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail.
