First it was Anthony Black.
Then Paolo Banchero.
Last but not least, it happened to Jalen Suggs, too.
One by one each of three members of the Magic received a technical foul throughout the third quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Orlando escaped Indiana with a 112-110 victory, but those three techs could have shifted the outcome of the contest in a different direction had Jamahl Mosley‘s squad not been more careful.
“I didn’t agree with a few of those technicals but (we) definitely just have to stay poised, and after the first or second bad one, you can’t get another,” said Banchero, who received his technical at the 4:51 mark of the third frame Wednesday. “You’ve got to realize how the refs are calling the game and just do a better job of not getting those, because close games like that can go the other way.
“So, it’s something that we’ve got to work on, but I don’t think it’ll be too much of a problem for us,” he added.
Black picked up his technical foul less than three minutes into the second half while Suggs earned his with under a minute to play in the third.
It was the second technical of the season for both Black and Banchero, according to the NBA, but already the fourth for Suggs.
Players get fined for each technical foul they receive and the amount of money increases as the techs add up throughout the season. Each of the first five techs come with a $2,000 fine while the next five jump to $3,000. Techs 11-15 are worth $4,000 each with a warning letter sent when the violator reaches his 12th technical foul.
From there, the penalties get more severe and can include one-game suspensions.
Although Magic guard Desmond Bane didn’t receive a tech during Wednesday’s game, he entered Friday’s contest at Chicago with five on the season.
Bane has earned the most technicals on the Magic with Suggs at four, Goga Bitadze and Wendell Carter Jr. at three, and Banchero and Black at two. Bane and Suggs have also each earned one flagrant foul this season.
“We’ve got to show a little more maturity as a whole,” Bane said. “Every guy on the roster was chirping back, asking for certain calls. Once we understand the way the game’s going to be officiated and kind of how it’s going, we just need to ride with that, instead of trying to change it or beg for something.
“That’s definitely something that we need to work on, and we’ll continue to get better at as the season goes on,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mosley has earned three techs himself, according to the NBA. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle, who Mosley worked under previously at Dallas, has six.
The aforementioned fines apply to coaches too.
Mosley shared a similar message as his players, and he wants to see more focus from his group when it faces the Pacers again on Sunday at Kia Center.
“Calls are not going to go your way,” the Magic coach said. “Whether you’re getting calls against you or for you, you’ve just got to continue to play the right way, keep your poise and focus on coming together more than the things that you can’t control.”
