JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Dolphins won their ninth match in a row, taking down the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in straight sets. JU is one match away from tying its program-best win streak of 10 matches set in 2013.

The Dolphins were led by a dominant defensive performance, collecting 14 total blocks, two shy of the program record for a three-set match. Sophomore Haley Yount set the pace with four total blocks while also leading the team with nine kills.

How It Happened

Set 1

The Dolphins jumped all over the Colonels, taking a 5-0 lead on the serve of junior Jade Cuya Cobos. Eastern Kentucky cut the lead to two, 17-15, but Jacksonville answered, taking five of the next six points to reach 20 points first and take a commanding advantage in the opener.

Junior Rebekah Williams scored her third kill of the opening set to put the Dolphins on 23, then Yount and senior Breanna McDonough combined for a block to put JU on set point. Yount closed it out, rising from the middle for a kill to win Set One, 25-17.

Set 2

Eastern Kentucky rallied early in the second, taking a 6-3 lead. The Colonels stayed just in front through the first half of the set, until Yount put the Dolphins back in front, 15-14. EKU retook the lead, 19-18, but a 3-0 JU lead put JU back on top.

After a service error brought the Colonels within one, Jacksonville rattled off its best streak of the set. McDonough and grad student Madi Novak recorded kills and Cuya Cobos notched a service ace. With the ‘Phins on set point, the JU block proved impenetrable again.

Junior Alija Heins and Novak rose from the left side to send back an errant EKU attempt, pushing Jacksonville to a Set Two victory, 25-20.

Set 3

After a pair of dogfights, the Dolphins lifted and separated in the third set. A 10-0 JU run put Jacksonville up nine early, allowing the hosts to close out the deciding set even as the Colonels found their game.

EKU cut the lead as close as three, but the Dolphins routinely found an answer. Jacksonville scored six of the final 10 points, with Novak closing out the match with a kill to win Set Three, 25-20.
