It’s never easy to make decisions on the Sentinel’s yearly all-area football selections, and the 2025 All-Area Football Team proved no different. In particular, the decision for the top quarterback was more difficult than ever, as Orlando area quarterbacks have significantly picked up their games.

Late in the season, it appeared as if Bishop Moore sophomore quarterback Blake McCullough could run away with the first-team honors. But a late season surge, capped by the Class 7A state championship by Lake Mary’s Noah Grubbs, earned Grubbs a tie with McCullough at QB.

Grubbs, who has signed to play for Notre Dame, went on a tear in the last six games. He completed nearly 70% of his passes (114-of-166) for 1,519 yards and 19 touchdowns. It was an impressive way to cap a stellar career as a four-year starter.

That’s not to cast any shade on what other quarterbacks accomplished, like second-team selection Dereon Coleman of Jones, and three sophomores Jackson Stecher of Lake Brantley, AJ Chung of West Orange and Jeremiah Lattier of St. Cloud, or juniors Tre Kelly of South Lake and Sebastian Galeano of Oviedo, or seniors Carter Emanuel of Edgewater and Sabby Meassick at Toho Kalaya.

It was certainly the year of the quarterback.

OFFENSE

QB — Noah Grubbs, 6-4, 215, senior, Lake Mary

Grubbs led Lake Mary to the Class 7A state championship to cap a storied career for the Notre Dame-bound quarterback. He also led the Rams to the 2024 state finals, but fell short of the title. As a senior, Grubbs threw for 3,250 yards and 40 touchdowns. He ends his career at No. 6 on the state’s all-time passing list with 11,537 yards and tied for No. 2 all-time in touchdown passes with Florida signee Will Griffin of Tampa Jesuit at 143 TD passes.

QB — Blake McCullough, 6-1, 190, sophomore, Bishop Moore

Bishop Moore was supposed to be a work in progress on offense in 2025, having lost star quarterback Bjorn Jurgensen to Virginia via graduation. However, in stepped new offensive coordinator Ryan Fleming and sophomore QB McCullough and no problem. McCullough is the nephew of former NFL star tight end Greg Olsen, who will likely be voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame when the announcement is made Feb. 5. McCullough was third in the state in passing with 3,477 yards and threw 37 TD passes. He completed 67% of his throws (199-of-276), leading Bishop Moore into the Class 3A state semifinals.

RB – Taihj Moore, 5-10, 170, sophomore, DeLand

Moore solidified himself as one of the top football players in the state for the Class of 2028, after breaking on the scene as a freshman a year ago. What’s scary is that his coach Rick Darlington says the best is yet to come for the sophomore. This past season, he ran for 1,427 yards and 27 touchdowns in helping DeLand reach the Class 7A state quarterfinals.

RB – Amare’ Johnson, 5-10, 180, senior, Bishop Moore

Johnson was another big reason why Bishop Moore was able to go 9-0 to start the season, and reach the 3A semifinals. He made an impact quickly after moving in from West Virginia before his junior season. As a senior, he was the state’s No. 4-leading rushing with a school record 2,149 yards and 29 rushing touchdowns. He will play college football at Missouri State.

RB – Aaron Hardy, 5-7, 170, senior, Boone

After making the unselfish move to defense to help the team as a junior, Hardy returned to his running back spot as a senior and helped Boone to a 9-0 start and the Braves reached the second round of the Class 7A playoffs. Tough for his size, Hardy ran for 1,521 yards, good for No. 25 in the state and he scored 24 touchdowns. He has yet to sign to play college football.

OL – Chancellor Barclay, 6-4, 290, senior, TFA

Ranked as the No. 15 interior offensive lineman in the country, Barclay has been one of the top linemen in Central Florida since his sophomore season, when he played at Lake Minneola before transferring to TFA. He’s a skilled technician who prides himself in mechanics and work ethic. Barclay will play at Clemson.

Talented Boone offensive lineman Rhys Woodrow, who is committed to Miami, has earned an invitation to play in the Army All-American Game. (Chris Hays/Orlando Sentinel)

OL – Rhys Woodrow, 6-4, 270, senior, Boone

Woodrow has been a mainstay on the Boone line since his sophomore season and often stepped in on the defensive line, as well. He helped pave the way for Aaron Hardy’s breakout season. Woodrow has signed to play at Miami, where he will join three other Central Florida offensive linemen: Max Buchanan of Seminole, Jaden Wilkerson of Edgewater and Demetrius Campbell of Orlando Christian Prep.

OL – Ben Jones, 6-3, 290, senior, Edgewater

Jones has been a four-year starter on the offensive line at Edgewater, and he is considered by many opposing coaches to be the best technique lineman in the area. He has good feet and holds his blocks by always getting in great position and using terrific hand placement. Jones has signed to play at Appalachian State.

OL – Reed Ramsier, 6-5, 3017, junior, TFA

Another great technician, Ramsier has made tremendous strides under the guidance of TFA offensive line coach Chad Mavety. He came over from Boone as a sophomore and helps give TFA one of the top offensive lines in the state. Despite his size, he can move very well.

OL — Aiden Galles, 6-6, 275, sophomore, East Ridge

Galles is an up-and-comer who already has college football coaches drooling at the opportunity to sign him. He helped East Ridge jump out to a 6-0 start this past season. His technique is already solid, but he continues to improve and should be one of the best offensive linemen in state in the class of 2028.

WR — Kenyon Alston, 6-2, 175, senior, Bishop Moore

The top target for Blake McCullough, Alston was a big reason Bishop Moore scored more than 43 points per game this past season. He’s big with terrific hands and also has great play-making ability after the catch. Alston caught 51 passes for 1,136 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging a whopping 22.28 yards per catch. Signed to play at Illinois.

WR – Barrett Schulz, 6-7, 190, senior, Lake Mary

Schulz, who transferred to Lake Mary from Orange City University High before the season, finally found a rhythm with Grubbs as the Rams made their run to the state title. One of the most gifted pass catchers in the state, Schulz caught 81 passes, good for second in the area, for an Orlando-leading 1,326 yards and 17 touchdowns. He will play college ball at FIU, on the field where he caught the Hail Mary pass that won the state title for Lake Mary.

WR – Keydrick Powell, 6-2, 175, senior, South Lake

Powell led area receivers in yardage for most of the season, but fell short of the overall lead after South Lake’s season ended at 13 games. He helped the Eagles to their first playoff berth in 25 years, catching 70 balls for 1,203 yards and nine touchdowns. He has yet to sign to play college football.

K-P – Kason Mullis, 6-4, 185, senior, Jones

Mullis transferred to Jones from Bartow before his junior season, and he gave the Tigers their first legitimate field-goal threat in more than 20 years. He kicked a school record 53-yard field goal as a senior, and also made a pair of 45-yarders. He was a big part of why Jones was able to keep its 4A state title game close in the early going, averaging 44 yards on three punts. He has yet to sign to play college football.

DEFENSE

DL — Fred Ards, 6-5, 245, junior, Jones

Ards has tremendous strength and outstanding speed for a big edge rusher. He’ll need to get more consistent, but when he’s focused he’s lights-out. Ards averaged 5.3 tackles this season with 73 stops. He also had 11 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. He’s the No. 1 player in the Sentinel’s 2027 Central Florida Super60.

DL — DeAnthony Lafayette, 6-1, 230, senior, Lake Nona

Lafayette finished a close second to Jesse Barker Jr. for Defensive Player of the Year. He led the area in sacks with 19.5 and he was No. 9 overall in the state. He has great speed off the edge and uses his athleticism to get around blockers. Lafayette, who had originally committed to LSU, will play college football at Miami.

DL — Aiden Anderson 6-3, 230, senior, Edgewater

Sometimes he’s overshadowed on a great Edgewater defense, especially when running back Damian Moore doubles up at linebacker. But Anderson is a star in his own right. He had 52 tackles on the season and helped Edgewater to a 12-1 record. He also led the team in both tackles for loss, with 19, and sacks, with 12. He will play college football at Mercer.

DL — Noah Prince, 6-4, 225, junior, Bishop Moore

Prince stood out among a stellar Bishop Moore defensive front, which had 69 sacks overall. He earned the nod over teammate Mateo Rivera. Prince accounted for 14 sacks and he had 19 tackles for loss in helping the Hornets reach the Class 3A state semifinals. Prince had 66 tackles overall and 17 tackles for loss.

DL — Chris Sanon, 6-2, 225, sophomore, Evans

Sanon had a breakout sophomore season, leading a stingy Evans defense that allowed just nine points per game and had five shutouts. Sanon led the area in sacks with 22, which was good for No. 4 in the state, and he had 42 tackles. He also led Evans with 28 tackles for loss.

LB — Zi’rieck Roberts, 5-11, 215, senior, Evans

Roberts led the Orlando area in tackles by nearly 30 tackles, and if this kid had a few more inches in height, college coaches would be all over him. He has a terrific motor and is constantly on the ball. He had 174 tackles this season, an average of 15.8 tackles per game, including 109 solo stops. He had 22 tackles for loss. He has yet to sign to play college football, but wherever he lands, someone is getting a steal.

LB — Bertrand Derose, 6-0, 215, senior, Jones

Derose was a savior this season for a Jones team that was lacking in defensive experience and needed a solid middle to hold things up for a very fresh secondary. In stepped Derose, a transfer from Oak Ridge after his sophomore season. Derose never really took hold of defensive expectations as a junior, but this season he was laser-focused and led the 4A state finalist in tackles with 105. He has yet to sign to play college football.

LB — JJ Edwards, 6-2, 195, senior, Edgewater

Edwards was another finalist for the Sentinel’s Defensive Player of the Year honor, falling into a second-place tie with Lake Nona’s Lafayette, whom he will join at Miami in the future. Edwards is strong and fast and adept at bursting through gaps and finding the ball carrier. He led the team in tackles with 77 and had 16 tackles for loss. He also had 10 sacks.

LB — Raheem Turner Jr., 6-0, 205, senior, Seminole

Another linebacker who is extremely quick and adept at filling gaps. Turner carries that traditional Seminole toughness and did plenty of dirty work for the ‘Noles as a three-year starter. He led the team in tackles with 93 and also had 11 tackles for loss, four sacks and 12 QB hurries.

DB — Bryce Williams, senior, St. Cloud

A candidate for the Sentinel’s Iron Man of the Year honor, Williams did it all for St. Cloud, especially on the defensive side of the ball, where he had nine interceptions, which was good for No 4 in the state. He was third on the team in tackles with 65. Williams also caught 49 passes for 804 yards and nine touchdowns. He has signed to play at Middle Tennessee State.

DB — Demetre Pryor, 5-11, 175, sophomore, Evans

Pryor picked up right where he left off his freshman season at Jones, where he had seven interceptions. He also had seven interceptions this season after transferring to Evans. Pryor was fifth on the team in tackles with 42. He has an uncanny knack for tracking down the football and should be heavily recruited as his career progresses.

DB — Devin Jackson, 6-2, 190, senior, TFA

Jackson is one of the top safeties in the country and he has had a terrific two seasons at TFA, after coming over from West Orange. Jackson had three interceptions as a senior and is ranked as the No. 8 safety in the nation by 247 composite rankings. He had 43 FBS scholarship offers and has signed to play at Oregon.

DB — Jaylen Lowman,  5-11, 150, sophomore, Winter Springs

Lowman had a tremendous breakout season as a sophomore, helping the team make the playoffs for the first time since 2019. He was second in the state with 10 interceptions, and he was fourth on the team in tackles with 48. He also blocked four punts. It was a huge step up from his freshman season, when he played just four games and had one pick.

LS — Leandro Gutierrez, 5-11, 185, senior, Hagerty

Gutierrez is mostly known for his abilities as Hagerty’s leading rusher at running back, but the senior was also a solid linebacker and one of the top long snappers in the country. He is ranked No. 65 by Kohl’s Kicking, with an average snap time of 0.72 seconds. As a running back, he had 853 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 18 passes for 195 yards and two TDs. On defense, Gutierrez had 33 tackles.
