TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to take down Alcorn State 33-28 on Homecoming.

The Rattlers improved to 2-4 on the year and 1-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Braves fell to 1-6 and 0-3.

RJ Johnson III led Florida A&M’s passing attack with 323 yards through the air, tossing one touchdown without throwing an interception. The signal caller also added 33 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Thad Franklin Jr. totaled 67 yards to lead the Rattlers’ ground attack in the game. Goldie Lawrence also tacked on 33 yards on an exciting reverse for a touchdown.

Johnson III’s most prolific target in the ballgame was Kenari Wilcher, who caught five passes for 83 yards. Miles Campbell got in on the action in the passing game as well, hauling in three balls for 59 yards.

Latarie Kinsler showed out for the Florida A&M defense, recording a tackle for loss and one sack.

Florida A&M converted on 47.1 percent of third-down attempts on the day. The Rattlers also went 2-for-2 on fourth down.

Florida A&M’s defense held up against Alcorn State’s offense, giving up 304 total yards.

How It Happened

Florida A&M scored on the opening drive of the game to take a 3-0 lead. The Rattlers then increased their lead to 6-0 with another score.

Alcorn State fought back to take a 14-6 lead before Florida A&M put a field goal on the board to cut into the lead with 1:51 left in the second quarter and make it a 14-9 game. The Rattlers then kept the momentum going with a 17-yard touchdown strike to from Johnson III to take a 17-14 lead.

Florida A&M continued to expand its lead, scoring again with 12:24 left in the fourth quarter to go ahead 24-14. The Braves then rallied, tallying seven points before the Rattlers responded with a field goal to extend their lead to 27-21.

Florida A&M held the Braves off the board before scoring for a final time with 3:35 left in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 33-21. Florida A&M didn’t score again, and Alcorn State tacked on seven more points to finish off the scoring.
