MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Three young lives were lost in two separate crashes in Martin County over the weekend, leaving a community grieving and prompting extra support at a local high school.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, two teenagers were killed in an overnight crash in Hobe Sound around 10 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Bridge Road and Interstate 95. Deputies say a 17-year-old male student at Martin County High School and a 16-year-old female from Jupiter both died at the scene.
A 13-year-old passenger was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the second vehicle involved suffered minor injuries. Authorities say family members have been notified, but the victims’ names are being withheld at this time.
Less than 24 hours later, another deadly crash claimed the life of a young driver. Investigators say a 20-year-old man was killed after losing control of his vehicle on Seabranch Boulevard near U.S. 1. The car struck a tree and burst into flames. The driver was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
A 20-year-old passenger was able to escape the burning vehicle with the help of a good Samaritan and was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. She remains in the intensive care unit.
Investigators believe excessive speed was a contributing factor in the single-vehicle crash. The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate both incidents.
In response to the loss of a student, the Martin County School District says its Crisis Response Team is at Martin County High School today and will remain available throughout the week as needed. The team includes five school social service workers experienced in grief counseling, along with school counselors supporting students and staff. Counselors are also following the student’s class schedule to provide support throughout the school day.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers, especially young drivers, to slow down, remain attentive, and use extra caution during nighttime hours, calling the past few days a somber start to the new year on local roadways.
CBS12 is continuing to follow this story and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
