The Miami Dolphins were expected to move quickly in finding candidates to interview for their open general manager role upon the end of the 2025 season, and the first six names have already surfaced Monday.
A major commonality among the names who have been requested for interviews: They come from franchises who have consistently won in recent years.
Three of the candidates come from the San Francisco 49ers: director of scouting and football operations Josh Williams, vice president of player personnel Tariq Ahmad and assistant GM RJ Gillen.
The Dolphins also, according to various national reports, requested interviews with Green Bay Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan, Philadelphia Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby and Los Angeles Rams assistant GM John McKay.
Dolphins owner Steve Ross’ search team, which has Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman lending a helping hand as a consultant, is expected to value executives with a strong scouting background, and that seems to be a trend with many of the first flurry of names.
Sullivan has held that role in Green Bay since 2022. From 2018 through 2021, he was co-director of player personnel. Before these elevated roles, he scouted the Southeast and Central Plains regions over eight years as a scout for the Packers.
Halaby has been in his position in Philadelphia under Eagles GM Howie Roseman since 2022. He was vice president of football operations and strategy before that since 2016 and special assistant to the GM from 2012 to 2015.
Williams has held his current title for two seasons. From 2022 to 2023, he was a national scout after five years (2017-21) as an area scout.
Ahmad completed his first season as VP of player personnel after serving two seasons as director of player personnel (2023-24) and the previous three seasons (2021-23) as director of college scouting. He has also been the 49ers’ assistant director of college scouting during the 2020 season after five seasons (2015-19) as an area scout.
Gillen completed his first season as San Francisco’s assistant GM. He spent the previous two seasons as director of player personnel and has experience as director of pro personnel and as a pro personnel scout. He joined the 49ers as an assistant in the scouting department in 2015.
Before becoming assistant GM in Los Angeles, McKay was the Rams’ director of pro personnel and has also served as the assistant director of pro scouting.
Miami has a GM vacancy after the Oct. 31 firing of Chris Grier. Champ Kelly was internally elevated to interim GM and is expected to be among candidates, as well.
After another disappointing season that ended 7-10 after Sunday’s season-ending loss to the New England Patriots, many are still also awaiting word on the job status of coach Mike McDaniel, who is 35-35, including 0-2 in the playoffs, after four seasons at the helm. McDaniel is scheduled to hold an end-of-season news conference later Monday afternoon.
Head coach interview
Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is again receiving head coaching interest as the 2026 hiring cycle got started Monday.
Weaver was requested by the Atlanta Falcons for their coaching vacancy, opened by firing Raheem Morris Sunday night.
Atlanta also interviewed Weaver in 2024, when the team originally hired Morris instead. He also interviewed with the Washington Commanders then, who ultimately went with Dan Quinn, leading to Weaver taking the defensive coordinator job with Miami two years ago.
In January 2025, Weaver interviewed with the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints.
