A man is dead after a car hit him Monday night in Fort Lauderdale and did not stop, police said.
The hit-and-run happened at around 8 p.m. on West Sunrise Boulevard near NW 5th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale Police said. Currently, police do not have any information on who the driver was or the car they were driving.
Police have not released information on the man killed, but family members identified him as 70-year-old Johnnie Davis.
Davis’ family showed up to the scene Monday night, trying to get answers as to what happened to their loved one.
His daughter, Jazzlynn Simmons, told NBC6 that they live across the street and saw her father about an hour earlier.
Simmons’ daughter came out and saw her grandfather in the road, she said.
“My daughter was like, wow, I wonder if that can be my grandpa, so when she came down here, it was exactly her grandpa, my father, dead,” Simmons said. “He’s of life and love, and I don’t understand how someone can hit my father and run like that. I just want justice for my father, and I wish someone would come forward. I just lost my mom November 6th. I’m very hurt.”
Westbound traffic on West Sunrise Boulevard was diverted northbound on North Andrews Avenue throughout the investigation.
