ST. PETERSBURG — A St. Petersburg man died after running a red light and crashing into another vehicle at a busy intersection, police said.

Izell Shelby, 31, was speeding west on North Frontage Road around 9:30 p.m. Dec. 27 when he ran the red light at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North and struck a silver Mitsubishi Outlander, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The Mitsubishi was heading north through the intersection on a green light when Shelby’s blue Dodge Charger slammed into it, police said.

Shelby died at Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital St. Petersburg. The Mitsubishi’s driver and three passengers were taken to the same hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police said speed and failure to wear a seat belt contributed to the crash. Shelby was driving on a suspended license and had an active warrant at the time, according to the department.
