Subtitled “Through the Eyes of Zora: Stories, Research and Reflections,” this free event at the downtown public library will bring Eatonville’s favorite daughter to vivid life through readings of her still-essential texts.

Hurston, author of celebrated books Their Eyes Were Watching God, Mules and Men and Tell My Horse, grew up in nearby Eatonville, the oldest incorporated African American municipality in the United States; she returned to Florida after her time as part of the Harlem Renaissance.

Consider it educational pregaming ahead of the annual Zora Fest in Eatonville at the end of this month, or a novel way to introduce the younger members of your household to Hurston. Pre-registration through the library required.

4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, Orlando Public Library, 101 E. Central Blvd., ocls.org, free.
