CAPE CORAL – A loaded firearm was discovered in a student’s backpack at Trafalgar Elementary School in Cape Coral on Thursday.

The school’s screening system, OPENGATE, alerted the staff and prompted law enforcement to search the student’s backpack, where law enforcement found the firearm. 

Authorities said the student was isolated when the firearm was discovered.

The Cape Coral Police Department later arrested the student’s father on charges related to the incident.
