Florida State continued to unravel in Week 8, losing to a 2-4 Stanford team on Saturday night in front of 26,470 fans at Stanford Stadium. The Seminoles have now lost four consecutive games and are 3-4 on the season.

Florida State’s season started with a promising 31-17 win over then-No. 8 Alabama in Week 1. However, entering the bye in Week 9, FSU has not won a game since it blew out Kent State 66-10 on Sept. 20.
The bye could be an ideal time for Florida State to fire head coach Mike Norvell. Norvell entered the season on the hot seat after going 2-10 in 2024.

Per Pete Nakos of On3, the Seminoles are discussing Norvell’s future via informal phone calls on Sunday. By all appearances, FSU is closing in on a decision to fire Norvell, but the timing of the decision is unknown.
“Sources have told On3 that FSU decision makers are holding informal phone calls on Sunday morning to discuss the future under Mike Norvell,” Nakos wrote. “Florida State lost at Stanford last night, 20-13, extending the winless streak of ACC wins to well over a calendar year.
“Sources told On3 last week that there was real concern about whether donors could be motivated to fund another Norvell roster. After the Stanford loss, it puts Norvell’s future in serious doubt. He has one of the biggest buyouts in college football, sitting at north of $54.4 million. Norvell is 20–24 all-time in the ACC and 1-11 in the last two seasons in conference play.”
Norvell is 36–31 overall at FSU. Florida State’s best season under Norvell came in 2013, when the program finished 13-1 and made an appearance in the Orange Bowl. The Noles were trending toward making the College Football Playoff, but quarterback Jordan Travis’ season-ending injury caused the selection committee to bypass the undefeated ACC team.
Since winning the ACC championship in 2023, Florida State is 5-15.
The state of Florida is set to have two high-profile college football coaching searches. The Gators are likely to fire head coach Billy Napier by the end of the season.
