Play ball! On a new field, possibly.

After years of meetings, coordination and persistence, the City of Miami has agreed to partner with the Village of Key Biscayne on a joint plan to build a shared-use athletic field on Virginia Key, just east of the wastewater plant.

A resolution introduced by Commissioner Damian Pardo was on Thursday’s agenda for the City of Miami’s Commission meeting, and it passed.

The first step will be drafting an Interlocal Agreement (ILA) between the Village and the City of Miami to develop a design criteria package (DCP) for the athletic field.

The Village has allocated $250,000 in its budget, of which $150,000 will be committed to match the City of Miami’s $150,000 contribution for the initial planning phase.

Once the design package is complete, Village officials we will have a clear understanding of the path forward, along with any restrictions, and a reliable cost estimate before moving forward with any construction.

Finding more places to host games and practices for various sports has been a hot topic from parents for several years. Key Biscayne already has a shared agreement with MAST Academy for its sports venue.

Virginia Key would provide the next closest access for local kids.

This is a developing story
