Chipotle Mexican Grill will take over the Krispy Kreme spot at 9100 4th St. North in St. Petersburg. For over ten years, the doughnut shop served customers there. The fast-casual chain filed paperwork with the Southwest Florida Water Management District to remodel the 2,430-square-foot building.

Work starts in March. Completion is set for September. Mississippi-based Streamline Development Partners heads up the project with Vero Beach-based Quick Concepts Group LLC handling design and engineering.

The doughnut shop opened this standalone site in 2013. Ragin’ Grill used to occupy the building, and before that, YaYa’s Flame Broiled Chicken ran operations there.

Krispy Kreme had a long history in St. Petersburg before landing on 4th Street. The chain operated at 3441 Central Ave. for decades until that property sold and became Fray’s Donuts in the late 1990s. This closure ends Krispy Kreme’s presence in St. Petersburg since it’s the city’s only remaining shop.

Krispy Kreme has been shuttering weak performers across the country to boost profits. In 2025, the company withdrew from about 3,500 spots, which included cutting ties with McDonald’s at roughly 2,400 stores.

The swap shows how Chipotle reuses old buildings as it grows. Back in late 2020, the company transformed a former Krispy Kreme in Maine into one of its restaurants, spending $350,000 on renovations that added a drive-thru.

St. Petersburg’s new spot will get a Chipotlane — Chipotle’s drive-thru pickup lane built for online orders. The company launched Chipotlanes in 2018 to speed up service for customers who order and pay through their phones or computers ahead of arrival.

The first Chipotlane in St. Pete opened last year at 3901 34th St. South in the Skyway Marina District. Largo will get another one at 13677 Walsingham Road in what used to be a KFC.

St. Petersburg already has three regular Chipotle spots. Two sit on 4th Street at 3540 4th St. North and 780 4th St. North. A third operates near Tyrone Mall at 1418 66th St. North. The chain runs over 3,700 restaurants worldwide and expects to open between 350 and 370 new sites in 2026.
