The Florida Department of Health in Lee County issued a water quality advisory for Lynn Hall Memorial Park in Fort Myers Beach.

Tests conducted on Wednesday revealed that bacteria levels in the water exceeded state guidelines. The advisory will remain in place until levels return to a safe threshold.

The DOH say the bacteria, Enterococci, is found in the intestinal track in animals and people. When this bacteria is found in water it can be from potential fecal contamination.

The DOH says the contamination can happen through water run off, pets and wildlife, and from sewage.

Beachgoers should avoid swimming or playing in the water. The DOH says the contamination can cause diseases, infections, and rashes if it comes in contact with cuts and sores.
