A suspect has been arrested in the hit-and-run in Fort Lauderdale earlier this week that left a grandfather dead, police said Friday.

Travaris Lamain McCoy, 25, was arrested Thursday on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, Fort Lauderdale Police officials said.

The victim, 70-year-old Johnnie Lee Davis, was struck and killed around 8 p.m. Monday on West Sunrise Boulevard near Northwest 5th Avenue, police said.

Police said an “intense investigation” led to the arrest of McCoy.

“Fort Lauderdale Police Department remains committed to ensuring justice in this case and extends its deepest condolences to the family of Johnnie Lee Davis during this difficult time,” the department said in a statement.

McCoy was booked into jail and was expected to appear before a bond court judge on Friday.

Davis’ daughter spoke Monday night about losing her father.

“He’s of life and love, and I don’t understand how someone can hit my father and run like that. I just want justice for my father, and I wish someone would come forward. I just lost my mom November 6th. I’m very hurt,” Jazzlynn Simmons said.
