Fatal hit-and-run suspect faces judge

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Fort Lauderdale police have arrested the driver they say hit and killed a grandfather on West Sunrise Boulevard and then fled Monday evening.

Police took Travaris McCoy, 25, into custody on several charges on Thursday, including leaving the scene of a crash causing death.

McCoy is accused of hitting Johnnie Lee Davis, 70, as he crossed the street near Northwest Fourth Avenue. Police said McCoy never stopped to help Davis or call police.

Authorities said McCoy confessed to being the driver. In bond court on Friday morning, it was revealed that he has a criminal past.

A Broward County judge set McCoy’s bond at $76,000.
