HIALEAH, Fla. — An 84-year-old man was arrested Friday after he struck someone in a wheelchair with his vehicle in Hialeah and then fled the scene, leaving the victim to die, authorities said.
According to an arrest report from the Hialeah Police Department, the hit-and-run was reported at about 10:45 a.m. Friday in the area of Palm Avenue and West 49th Street.
Police said Antonio Hernandez, who lives in Hialeah, was driving his gold Honda Pilot SUV south in the outside lane of Palm Avenue when the victim entered the lane and was struck by the front of Hernandez’s vehicle.
According to the report, Hernandez continued driving, causing the victim and wheelchair to be pulled underneath the SUV.
Hernandez drove over the victim and then fled the scene, authorities said.
According to the report, a witness called 911 and the victim was found unresponsive, but breathing in the roadway when first responders arrived.
Police said the victim had suffered a head injury.
The victim was eventually transported to Hialeah Hospital, where he or she died shortly after arriving.
Police said they located Hernandez that same day at his home. His vehicle was found outside the home with blood on the front bumper and a pair of glasses attached to the hood.
Hernandez provided a statement to detectives, however that statement was redacted from the publicly released report.
Hernandez was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a death.
As of Monday morning, Hernandez remained held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond.
