Historians believe as much as $400 million worth of gold, silver, and jewels were lost in the storm in total, say the team that made the mega find.

Treasure hunters have been searching for the giant fortune since then.

“This discovery is not only about the treasure itself, but the stories it tells,” said Sal Guttuso, who is the director of operations for 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels, in a statement on the company’s website.

“Each coin is a piece of history, a tangible link to the people who lived, worked, and sailed during the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire. Finding 1,000 of them in a single recovery is both rare and extraordinary.”

The coins will be restored and protected before going on public display at local museums in Florida.
