To the editor:

My wife and I have been residents of Sanibel for over 25 years. During this time, we have experienced the vehicle traffic flow (sometimes short-term parking) on Periwinkle Way as the many tourists have come to visit Sanibel. In my engineering career, I have been involved with many projects which required a Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plan for the public.

The purpose of this letter is to compliment the Sanibel Public Works Department, Director Fred Mittl and Project Manager Scott Krawczuk on the wonderful job of planning, design, inspection and coordination (MOT) of the Periwinkle Way Repaving project. It is never easy to undertake a project which must remain in service to the public every day.

The phasing of the required “night-time work” was done in such a way to have minimal impact on Sanibel residents, visiting tourists and many contractors. Every few days, we would go about our daily travels and notice new work on the intersections, drainage areas or a new section of Periwinkle which was now in place (absent of detours). Of note, the final improvements, plus the very visible re-striping of the roadway for drivers, bikers, and pedestrians, certainly improves the safety for all.

Stantec Engineering was the engineer of record. Collier Paving completed the work on schedule and within budget.
