SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – The Florida Department of Transportation is developing an air taxi service that could be operational by the end of this year, offering an alternative to congested roadways.
The state’s Advanced Mobility Initiative will focus initially on the I-4 corridor, which the Florida Department of Transportation identifies as the most congested roadway in the state.
The Advanced Air Mobility Network will eventually expand statewide, but the first phase covers airports from Tampa through Orlando to Sarasota.

Florida is constructing the first vertiport in the country as part of a test bed that includes two vertiports designed to create a safe and controlled environment for testing advanced air mobility vehicles.
“We’ll be the first in the nation to have anything like that, quite potentially the globe,” a Florida Department of Transportation representative said.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
