The School District of Lee County has partnered with FleetForce Truck Driver Training to launch a new CDL training program that will serve as a pipeline for aspiring commercial truck drivers by providing them with essential training.Â
But it’s also aimed at meeting Southwest Florida’s growing workforce needs.Â
“Demand in the industry is not the problem, it’s drivers,” said Jean D., president of Ablin Logistics Inc. “There’s certainly a driver shortage, especially qualified drivers. Moving everything from small partials to oversize, overweight shipments.”
Florida is expected to require nearly 25% of the nation’s commercial truck drivers in the next decade. While the partnership with FleetForce is set to alleviate these issues, it’s also a crucial investment into the state’s economic future.
“It’s a great partnership between a third-party vendor where the School District of Lee County can work on fulfilling a need that we desperately have all the way across here in Lee County, as well as throughout Southwest Florida for those who need a CDL driver’s license,” said Edward Matthews, associate superintendent for adult, career, technical and alternative education for the School District of Lee County.
The program offers hands-on training for Fort Myers Technical College students at LeeTran headquarters, equipping students with Class A, B and C licenses, which are essential for earning a CDL.
“We have many students that are in the service industry, and will be able to hopefully transition over and get a CDL license to upscale their potential and get a better job,” said John Roszell, director of Fort Myers Technical College.
Graduates of FleetForce programs enjoy competitive salaries, healthcare and retirement benefits, and pre-hire opportunities with employers before completing training.
“This program definitely benefits businesses like ours, as well as the regional supply chain, and I think it’s a partnership that’s going to be great for the community,” said Jean.
Plans are underway to expand the program to Cape Coral Technical College, broadening access for residents seeking career opportunities in the trucking industry.
Classes are set to begin at Fort Myers Technical College, and students can enroll now.Â
