A new report from the Lee County School District revealed alarming statistics about drivers failing to stop for school buses with flashing lights. This violation poses a significant safety risk to children traveling to and from school.
In the first month since enforcement began, over 3,000 drivers have been cited for not stopping for school buses. Each violation carries a $225 fine, and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office reviews all violations before citations are issued.
The district identified the top locations with the most violations, which include Hanson Street, State Road 82, and Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers, Pondella Road in North Fort Myers, and U.S. 41 in Estero.
The fines collected will be used by the Lee County School District to enhance student safety. The funds will support safety programs, incentives to retain and recruit bus drivers, and the installation of more bus camera systems.Â
This initiative aims to ensure the safety of children and hold drivers accountable for their actions on the road.
