Panthers were invited to get into the Halloween spirit with the Worn/Reborn Club, where they made boo-tiful beaded bracelets and listened to spooky seasonal tunes at their Haunted Accessory Build-Off event last Wednesday.

This marked the second event for Worn/Reborn, a new FIU club focusing on alternative fashion and sustainability.

“We teach others about all different kinds of fashion, and how to repurpose materials for clothes through upcycling and recycling,” said Rebecca Gean, a Sophomore studying Chemistry who is the Treasurer of the club.

Using materials provided by the club, attendees were able to string together their own custom bracelet that they were free to take home.

The club, which had its first event in September of this semester, seeks to foster a community for students on campus who express themselves through fashion or have an interest in its history.

Jaskier Lopez, a Freshman studying Civil Engineering and the Secretary of the club, spoke about the benefits of joining a club that provides that space for students: “It’s a fun place to meet people if you’re into fashion. We help people expand their fashion knowledge, and we let them know where to find good thrifts. It’s nice to share what you know.”

Thrifting clothing can yield significant benefits for the environment, and is a subject the club feels strongly about.

Gean was passionate about promoting sustainable fashion: “Now more than ever, with global warming and fast fashion, it’s more harmful to buy clothes from places like Shien. We promote something healthier for the environment.”

It was a sentiment that Lopez echoed, saying, “Fast fashion is unhealthy. When you thrift, you can have timeless pieces and breathe new life into clothes.”
