CARE Elementary School
CARE Elementary School (CARE) recently received a meaningful gift in honor of the late Barbara Hinterkopf, a devoted community member whose vision and dedication helped establish the school more than a decade ago.
Barbara, co-owner of Kristine Michael’s in South Miami, was a beloved member of the community known for her dedication to underserved children. For years, she volunteered in reading programs for students in Overtown and Coconut Grove, experiences that inspired her to help create a school dedicated to literacy and academic success. She went on to help found CARE Elementary School in Overtown in 2015 and served on its board for a decade.
Since its founding, CARE has been committed to offering low-income children the quality education all children deserve. The school’s achievements are a testament to Barbara’s vision. In 2015, only 11 percent of CARE students were reading at grade level. On the 2025 standardized test, 92 percent of the total school were at or above grade level.
The donation, made by Miami philanthropist and Realtor Judy Zeder of The Jills Zeder Group, will sponsor CARE’s Kindergarten classroom this year as a tribute to Barbara’s lifelong commitment to early childhood literacy. Judy also has helped organize a fund among Coldwell Banker associates to provide CARE students with sweaters for the colder months.
“Barbara’s heart was with the children of Miami. She believed deeply in their potential and worked to make sure that they had the tools to succeed,” Judy Zeder said. “Her friendship was a gift, and I wanted to ensure that her legacy continues to inspire future generations.”
“Barbara had an integral role in making the vision of CARE Elementary School a reality 11 years ago and she was a dedicated member of our board of directors, even as she battled cancer,” said Marty Steinberger, president of CARE Elementary School. “Her vision and determination to provide opportunities for children in our community will continue to transform hundreds of young lives through the education she helped make possible.
“We’re very grateful for Judy’s generous contribution in remembrance of Barbara’s tremendous impact and of the beautiful friendship they shared,” Steinberger added.
When Barbara was diagnosed with cancer three years ago, Judy welcomed her into her Miami home as she received treatment at MCI and lovingly supported her through that time. Following Barbara’s passing, this gift ensures Barbara’s legacy and honors her devotion to children in need and will enable CARE to continue to shape lives for years to come.
