Orange County Public Schools is the eighth-largest school district in the nation and the fourth-largest in Florida, with about 209,000 students at 210 schools.

But back in the early days of Orlando, there was just one high school in Orlando and and its student population was much smaller than today’s schools. Much, much smaller.

This photo, from around 1895, shows the entire class at Orlando High School.

The former Orlando High School closed in 1952 when the city’s growth called for two new high schools to be built. They would be known as William R. Boone (in honor of OHS’ longtime principal) and Edgewater high schools.

Orlando High’s former building, located at the corner of Summerlin and Robinson, is known as Howard Middle School today.
