Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club members assist Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) staff with an oyster restoration project.
The Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club reported that the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) is working to study, protect and restore Florida’s oyster populations. It offers volunteer opportunities to help restore the oyster reefs. Recently, club members partnered with the SCCF to restore reefs using recycled oyster shells from local restaurants and fossilized oyster shells. They shoveled the oyster shells from a large shell recycle pile into five-gallon buckets. Club members then loaded them onto a boat and floated them during a higher tide from the boat, dumping them onto the restoration site.
