Magnolia Drive to reopen Friday as Phase 2 of multi-use trail project construction nears completion

  • January 16, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Magnolia Drive is expected to fully reopen Friday as construction on Phase 2 of the Magnolia Drive Multi-Use Trail Project nears completion, according to Leon County Government.

Magnolia Drive between Pontiac Drive and Diamond Street will open to traffic in the afternoon, county officials wrote in a press release Thursday.

The closure initially went into effect in May 2024, per the county’s website.

To enhance safety and reliability, the reopened segment “adds new trail and sidewalk connections, upgraded lighting, and critical underground utility and stormwater improvements,” officials announced.

Furthermore, the county says important Phase II elements include:

Streetscape and lighting improvements Improved multi-use trail/sidewalk connectionsA new traffic signal at Magnolia Drive and Jim Lee RoadConversion of overhead electric to underground electricImproved sewer and water infrastructure for increased storm resiliency

The project has been delivered in phases over several years, according to the county, to improve safety and modernize the South Magnolia corridor. Completed segments include upgraded roadway and infrastructure between Diamond and South Adams streets, per the release.

Phase 3, which includes Diamond Street to Apalachee Parkway, is currently in design, officials announced.

Leon County Commission Chairman Christian Caban says the project is about more than a roadway, but building a safer, “more resilient South Magnolia corridor for everyone who travels it.”

“Reopening Magnolia Drive restores a critical connection for residents and commuters while delivering the safety upgrades and long-term infrastructure improvements,” Caban said.
