JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN/Gray News) – An officer with the Jacksonville Police Department in North Carolina was shot and killed earlier this week by security officers at Camp Lejeune.

The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon near Tarawa Terrace Elementary School on the base.

Sources close to the victim identified him as Philip Chiorino, 31, who lived a couple of blocks from the school.

Jacksonville Police Chief Jarad Phelps confirmed an officer with the department was killed, but he did not disclose the identity.

“Any loss of a member of the department hurts,” Phelps told WITN in a phone call.

Camp Lejeune and NCIS have not yet released more information about the deadly shooting.

According to a social media post from the police department, Chiorino joined Jacksonville police in August 2024.

Sources said he was a former Marine firearms instructor who served a couple of tours in Afghanistan.

The department said it cannot comment further because the investigation is outside its jurisdiction.
