A man who was shot multiple times on Tuesday night by police has died, according to the Longwood Police Department Longwood PD shared the update on Friday, as well as body cam video of the incident, which occurred at a Circle K convenience store located at 1001 West State Road 434. According to police, officers responded to the location at the request of a store clerk who was concerned about an adult male in the store who indicated he was suicidal and armed with a gun. “The initial officer on scene engaged the male and attempted to de-escalate the situation through dialogue,” read a news release from the Longwood Police Department. “The male’s comments and actions seemed to indicate he was intent on provoking a confrontation with officers, and he resisted the officer’s efforts to de-escalate. Despite officer instructions to the contrary, he concealed his hands during portions of the encounter.” The man was later transported to a nearby hospital, but died following complications from surgery. “He repeatedly claimed to be armed, and then at one point suddenly pulled his hand from the area of his waistband and raised it in a hostile manner, seemingly to simulate drawing a firearm on another police officer on scene,” said Longwood police. “In response, that officer discharged his firearm, striking the male multiple times. While officers attempted to secure him in handcuffs, the male continued to resist.” Longwood Police tells WESH 2 that it did not locate a weapon on the man. The officer involved remains on administrative leave.As with all officer-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
