ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — New Rivers Ministries in Jacksonville has been forced to close its doors at night due to the need to make changes to its building to comply with city regulations.

“So essentially we need to have the fire alarm boxes installed, and we also need to have an engineer come out,” said Toni White of New Rivers Ministries. “And we need them to write up some type of exit plan for the building.”

There are other shelters in the area, such as Onslow Community Outreach, which had white flag shelters open last night, on nights when they aren’t open, some people might not have a place to go.

“We want to help,” said White. “At the end of the day, the unhoused individuals that we help are not concerned about any type of policies or procedures or anything of that, they want somewhere safe, warm to sleep.”

To combat this temporary issue, the shelter has been opening some mornings around 7 and staying open till around noon.
