Inter Miami is nearing a deal to sign Mexican international forward Germán Berterame from CF Monterrey, sources briefed on the deal tell The Athletic.

The clubs are in the final stages in the framework of a deal, with Miami set to pay a fee of $15 million, but the deal is still pending final details between Berterame and the clubs, sources say.

Berterame would be Miami’s third and final designated player if a deal is struck. Fox Deportes first reported the bid, and Miami owner Jorge Mas has since confirmed the club’s interest.

Currently, Miami’s two DPs are Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul, allowing the club to sign a third. Per MLS roster rules, that limits Miami to only having three U-22 initiative slots. There are presently four such players on the roster, but there is interest both domestically and abroad in Tomás Avilés and Telasco Segovia, sources add. One would need to leave for the club to be roster compliant by MLS opening weekend (Feb. 21), though Segovia could also be converted off of the U-22 roster status.

This is not the first time Berterame has been in the sights of an MLS club. The Portland Timbers triggered his release clause in March of 2024 and had personal terms agreed upon before Berterame ultimately chose to stay at Monterrey. A few months later, FC Cincinnati triggered his release clause. Personal terms were agreed upon, the player initially said yes and travel was booked for his medical and official signing, only for Berterame to again ultimately decide to stay in Mexico.

The 27-year-old, born in Argentina, received his Mexican citizenship in 2024 and debuted for the national team in October of that year. He has accrued six caps, appearing in five of the team’s last six games in 2025. Berterame is likely to be part of the team’s World Cup squad.

Berterame has been one of Liga MX’s better forwards for a number of years, initially arriving in Mexico in 2019 with San Luis before joining Monterrey in 2022. He has 68 goals and 15 assists for Los Rayados since joining.

The forward had 27 goals across all competitions in 2025, including thre at the FIFA Club World Cup. He has continued his scoring ways into 2026, with two goals in table-topping Monterrey’s first three matches of the Clausura, including one Friday night in a rout of Mazatlan.

Berterame is a natural center forward but can play wide if needed. Miami still has Luis Suárez on the roster for 2026, but was looking to boost the attack with their final DP spot. Wingers Tadeo Allende and Mateo Silvetti will play key roles again this season after winning MLS Cup in 2025.

Miami has been busy in building for its title defense and a run at the Concacaf Champions Cup, adding reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Dayne St. Clair, former Tottenham left back Sergio Reguilon, former Portland midfielder David Ayala, Brazilian center back Micael and Argentine right back Facundo Mura.
