PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Kindergarten students at Douglas L. Jamerson Elementary School in St. Petersburg were treated to some real snow on one of the coldest days of the year on Friday.
Pinellas County Schools said the PTA brought in two tons of snow to reward the students for first-semester achievements.
As a STEM school, they lean heavily into hands-on experiences.
“Our students do have various units that cover various topics around science, so this is the time for kindergarten and their weather unit, and every grade experiences that, but kindergarten is in it right now. For them to be able to come out into the atmosphere and actually turning learning into life, and actually bringing it alive, I think it’s the greatest takeaway from that,” said principal, Angela Lewis.

It was many of the kids’ first chances to sled, build snowmen, make snowballs and make snow art.
“This is my first time, I went to New York, but it wasn’t snowing, it was just cold,” said one kindergartener.

The school district said the students have been studying the weather and how it affects them.
“We’ve been learning about weather types, types of weather, like we did that a couple of days ago,” said one student.
Even with the chilly temperatures, the kids had a blast in the cold.
“Florida weather, it’s unpredictable, but we’re so excited that snow day actually feels like snow day,” Lewis said.
