BRANDON — A 17-year-old Brandon High School student died Jan. 9, a day after he was struck by a CSX train while walking on railroad tracks near his school, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 8:23 a.m. Jan. 8 to the tracks near Lakewood Drive in Brandon, where they found the teenager, according to HCSO. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition and died the next day, deputies said.

The student was walking on the tracks toward Brandon High School when the train came from behind and struck him, according to HCSO.

Deputies found a pair of headphones near the victim and noted dense fog in the area at the time of the crash, but were still investigating how the accident occurred, according to HCSO.
