For that reason, Jacksonville and several Northeast Florida counties are opening warming locations for anyone who needs a safe place to get out of the cold, not only people experiencing homelessness.

Officials said people without reliable heat at home are also encouraged to use the shelters.

City Rescue Mission on West State Street is one of the locations welcoming people seeking warmth.

Here are additional locations offering shelter to people in need of a warm place:

People who plan to use warming shelters are encouraged to bring items such as air mattresses, blankets and snacks, since not all locations will have those supplies available. Officials also recommend packing hygiene items and any necessary medications.

Officials urge residents to take cold-weather precautions overnight and check on vulnerable neighbors, including the elderly and those without adequate heating.
