More than 1,000 elementary students from 55 schools completed the last mile of a 26.2-mile marathon training program as part of the South Florida Fair Kids’ Mile place Saturday morning on the grounds of the South Florida Fair. The event was sponsored by Baptist Health.During the 12-week marathon training program, students ran portions of a marathon each week.Students who completed the final mile received one free admission to the fair, courtesy of Florida Blue, and a finisher’s medal for finishing their training.On Saturday night, 13 candidates competed in the Miss South Florida Fair and Miss Palm Beach County Scholarship Competition. Madison Anderer was crowned Miss South Florida Fair and Giselle Gonzalez won Miss Palm Beach County.The pageant included health and fitness and evening gown competitions, interview questions and talent events.The competition is part of the Miss America System and the winners will advance to the Miss Florida Competition in Lakeland this June. They can receive additional scholarship funds and compete for the privilege of representing the Sunshine State.The site of the 2027 Miss America competition hasn’t been announced.The 2025 and 2026 competitions were at the Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando.The South Florida Fair, which began Friday, runs through Feb. 1 at 9067 S. Boulevard.The weekday hours are noon to 10 p.m. except for a 1 a.m. start Monday on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
