City of Tallahassee hosts annual MLK Day parade, festival

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The City of Tallahassee is celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy with several events on Monday, including its annual parade.

The MLK Day Parade kicks off at 12 p.m. along Monroe Street. The parade route starts at Tennessee Street and heads south.

Road closures will start at 10:30 a.m. to allow for parade staging. Monroe Street from Brevard Street to Tennessee Street will be closed. Georgia, Carolina and Virginia Streets between Adams Street and Calhoun Street will also be closed from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Brevard Street will remain open.

The parade route will close starting at 11 a.m. and will remain closed until 2 p.m. The parade will move south along Monroe Street from Tennessee Street. Northbound traffic on Monroe Street will be detoured at Gaines Street and westbound traffic on Apalachee Parkway will be detoured at Franklin Boulevard.

The city of Tallahassee is also hosting the MLK Day Festival downtown from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This will take place along Adams Street and College Avenue.

City leaders will give welcome remarks at 1 p.m. which will be followed by live entertainment and vendors.

In the City Commission Chambers at City Hall, join a panel of local experts from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. for the Day of Dialogue which will explore the topic “Building and Sustaining a Nonviolent Community.”

The city encourages those attending the downtown events to arrive early. Parking is available for a fee in the Kleman Plaza parking garage as well as the parking garage at 215 South Calhoun Street. Free on-street parking is available downtown, except for on roads closed for events.

The annual NAACP march is closing S. Adams Street between Tennessee Street and E. Jefferson Street as well as E. Jefferson Street from S. Adams to Monroe Street from 8:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. Learn more about the NAACP march and rally here.
