FORT MYERS, Fla.—Southwest Florida celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a series of events that highlighted the enduring impact of his dream for equality.

The day began with a commemorative breakfast and was followed by the annual march, which culminated in a gathering at Centennial Park.

“For me, it’s like, I can actually help and like, represent my people, because we’ve been through so much,” said Kennadie Collins and Raniyah Usher. “And we can get to celebrate Martin Luther King for all he’s done for us, and like, pave the way for black people in general.”

Dr. King represented unity among all colors, backgrounds, and beliefs.

“We live in the Dunbar community, so that’s a big part of just uniting our community coming out and celebrating MLK, but also our churches in the Dunbar community,” said a participant.

Hundreds gathered for this year’s commemorative march, emphasizing its significance.

“It’s not a walk, it’s not a parade. It’s a march for equality, for unity, for freedom, for you to be who God created you to be,” said Father Browning.

Community leaders also attended, underscoring the importance of celebrating both similarities and differences.

“To be able to have a place like this where everyone can be in the collective and marching for the same mindset, the same reason, even though we may have different views, but we can still come together and get things done,” said Tracy McMillion. “So this parade, this march today, just kind of exemplifies that whole collective.”

Mayor Kevin Anderson expressed his hopes for the impact of such celebrations.

“I really hope when we have these celebrations, that it reminds people how far we have come when it comes to racial justice,” said Anderson. “But also it opens people’s eyes that we can’t stop there’s still work to be done, and the more we come together to do that work, the more we’re going to accomplish.”

The celebration continued with music, food, and a strong focus on the holiday’s significance.
