Fontainebleau Miami Beach is more than a resort. It is a cornerstone of Miami Beach’s identity and a symbol of the city’s global reputation. As the Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board reviews Fontainebleau Development’s proposed family-friendly improvements, Community Newspapers and I support the project and the thoughtful direction it represents for our community.

For generations, the Fontainebleau has helped define Miami Beach through its iconic architecture, open spaces, and cultural significance. The current proposal honors that legacy while recognizing an important reality: Miami Beach must continue to evolve responsibly to remain competitive, welcoming, and relevant for families and visitors alike.

What stands out in this proposal is what it does not do. It does not expand the resort’s footprint. It does not compromise the architectural character that has made the Fontainebleau a landmark. Instead, it responsibly repurposes existing outdoor areas to improve the guest experience while remaining respectful of the surrounding community and the city’s historic fabric.

Reinvestment of this nature is essential to the long-term health of Miami Beach’s hospitality economy. Projects like this strengthen our tourism sector, support local jobs, and ensure that legacy properties continue to contribute meaningfully to the city’s future rather than falling behind changing expectations.

The support expressed by the Greater Miami and the Beaches Hotel Association reinforces this point. Continued reinvestment in flagship properties benefits not just individual resorts, but the broader community that relies on a strong, sustainable tourism industry.

As the Historic Preservation Board considers the proposal and listens to public input, I encourage a balanced and thoughtful dialogue. Preserving Miami Beach’s architectural character and supporting responsible reinvestment are not competing goals. When done correctly, as this proposal demonstrates, they can and should work together.

Miami Beach’s success has always depended on respecting its past while preparing for its future. Supporting thoughtful improvements at institutions like the Fontainebleau is part of ensuring that the future remains strong.
