J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge staffers and volunteers recently judged 343 entries from five local schools as part of its annual Conservation Cartoon Contest, which pays homage to late political cartoonist Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling. They voted for the top three in each school. Trafalgar Middle School in Cape Coral was the winning recipient in a drawing for $500 worth of art supplies. Each entrant wrote a few words about their drawings. Abby Markovich, one of three winners from Patriot Elementary School, wrote about her entry: “My cartoon is about pollution and how we need to save the ocean and the sea creatures.”
