A home allegedly infested by rats.

Brenda Shulpius wrote into WINK News, saying a home on NE 2nd Ave in Cape Coral is filled with rats that also die in her yard, and now she says, it’s getting her dogs sick.

Shulpius said her dogs have gotten tape worms from the fleas the rats are leaving behind.

“You know, living in other cities, they would condemn this house,” said Shulpius, “I don’t know what the problem is with the city of Cape Coral and why they cannot issue condemnation orders. This is ridiculous. Whoever owns this house doesn’t give a rat’s butt, so to speak.”

In a statement, a spokesperson with the city of Cape Coral said, “Here’s an open case I found for 474 NE 2nd Ave. with multiple violations. It was opened on September 16, and an initial property inspection was completed the same day. A recheck inspection is scheduled for October 16. When Code Compliance receives a complaint, its first step is to inspect the reported property to confirm allegations. Then, if there is a problem, a written notice is usually given to the property owner to eradicate the rats. Upon notification, the owner is legally required to resolve the infestation, if there is one. If the owner fails to act, Code Compliance may impose fines. This is not specific to the property listed below, but these are the general steps taken.”

“Condemn the house. What are you waiting for? What’s the problem? Why are there no condemnation orders? All I hear is, oh, we’ll fine them. Fines are not going to take care of the problem. No,” said Shulpius.
