OPA-LOCKA, Fla. — Four suspects have been arrested after two 14-year-olds were shot Tuesday morning inside a gated townhome community in Opa-locka, authorities announced Wednesday.
According to police, the shooting occurred inside the Sailboat Cove community, at the corner of Northwest 17th Avenue and 143rd Street.
Police said both teens, who were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, were initially listed in critical but stable condition, but are showing signs of improvement.
A third victim was evaluated at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel but declined to be transported to the hospital, police said.
Police said a witness has been “cooperating with investigators and providing valuable information to aid the case.”
A motive for the shooting remains unclear.
The suspects’ ages and identities have not yet been released.
“The Opa-locka Police Department commends the swift actions of its officers, whose collaboration with the CID was instrumental in bringing about a rapid resolution of this incident,” the police department said in a statement Wednesday. “The Opa-locka Police Department remains committed to serving and protecting the residents of Opa-locka. The safety and well-being of community remains a top priority and we are committed to ensuring a comprehensive investigation.”
