The goal is to reduce congestion by doubling the capacity of the ramp

The project could wrap up in April, according to FDOT

FDOT expects work will wrap up soon on the I-4 west ramp to State Road 528.

The project, which began in January 2024, is widening the I-4 west off-ramp to the eastbound lanes of SR-528.

Final ramp paving is expected to be completed this month.

The goal, according to FDOT, is to double the capacity for this often clogged spot in the attractions area.

“Our tours are on the hour and we get many people that call us and they say, ‘I’m running late because we’re stuck in traffic,’” said Edgar Schaked, owner of the Chocolate Kingdom, which is located off International Drive near the I-4 and SR-528 interchange.

Posts for new overhead signs and lighting fixtures will also be added with the project expected to be completed in April.

“This is going to be an improvement without a doubt to allow more cars to go through here towards the airport or to International Drive,” Schaked said.

The estimated cost of construction is just over $20 million.

It’s just one of several I-4 projects going on right now in the attractions area. FDOT is also reconfiguring the Sand Lake Road and State Road 535 interchanges, along with building a new westbound lane of I-4 Express.
