TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Two people have been indicted for mail theft and fraud in Tallahassee, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida.

Jaheed Anthony Lloyd Williams, 25, and Taija Avion Smith, 26, face over two dozen charges, ranging from bank fraud, theft of mail and identity theft, per the state attorney’s office.

United States Postal inspectors say this investigation and the suspects are in direct response to mail theft and check fraud reports in the Big Bend.

More on crime in our area:

Last year, our WCTV Investigates team looked into the rising trend of check washing, where people intercept mailed checks and change the information on them to steal money.

In their Washed Away series, they spoke with USPS inspectors and check washing victims, and even uncovered a fraud hotspot in Leon County.
