TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Adams Street in downtown Tallahassee is a little bit brighter, and it’s all part of a new city initiative aimed at making the area feel safer and more welcoming.
The new lights are just the beginning of several beautification projects the city is rolling out, with the goal of creating a brighter, more inviting space —especially at night.
The CEO of the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority, Elias Mathes, said the lighting is part of phase one.
Mathes says the focus is on using public spaces to bring more people downtown, and the goal is to invest in the area and make it more walkable.

People who live and work in the area, like Jake Berry, the bar manager of The Filibuster, say it’s already making a difference and giving them a reason to stay a little longer.
“With session coming in right now, I think for places like The Filibuster, Hayward House and The Governor’s Club, all of our local politicians that are here and lobbyists definitely can enjoy this street and this whole area more with it being lit up at nighttime,” Berry said.
Tallahassee resident Lauren Wassell agreed that the lighting is an improvement.
“It makes you feel safer, and it makes it cuter and fun to walk around and kind of hang out with friends here,” Wassell said.
Mathes says future phases will include more landscaping, additional lighting and public art installations.
