PANHANDLE, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -Snow in Florida is a rare sight to see.
“Never did I think that we would get the amount of snow that we saw in some places,” said NewsChannel7’s Chief Meteorologist, Ryan Michaels.
On January 21st, 2025, historical snowfall blanketed the Florida Panhandle, with some areas receiving unprecedented accumulations.
“If you were further northwest in the panhandle — say up towards DeFuniak Springs, especially areas like Crestview, you might have gotten upwards of about eight inches of snow,” said Michaels, “whereas, a bulk, I’d say, of the panhandle saw four to six inches of snow.
With everything closed for the snowstorm, locals got to enjoy the winter weather.
“I love this — I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” one resident said, “I always thought I’d have to travel to go see some snow like this, now we actually have it here, and this is just — this is crazy.”
Children were especially excited by the rare experience.
“It’s so cool! I’ve never seen snow before!” describes one young girl, “Snowballs, and snowman, and sliding on my belly, and snow angels, and it’s been really fun!”
But the question remains- could such weather ever return?
“Never say never,” answered Michaels, “It’s whether, it’s a chaotic fluid, thing can happen that can be unpredictable sometimes.”
On Sunday, some parts of the panhandle saw some flurries.
“This is the first time in Florida’s history that back-to-back winters have had snow,” said Michaels.
Regardless of whether it happens again in our lifetimes, the Florida snow of 2025 will always be remembered by those who experienced it.
