To the editor:

I had concerns about the level of air traffic in the skies above the Cape. So I contacted the Lee County Port Authority and spoke with a representative.

What I learned was that much of the traffic is from the Flight Training Centers at Page Field in Fort Myers.  They have many domestic and foreign student pilots from many locations.  And they like to fly over the Cape due, at least in part, to the canals.  Apparently the student pilots appreciate the orientation of the canals.  Well and good for the pilots.  Maybe less good for residents on the ground.  Experiencing the frequent airplane noise.  It’s also less than ideal with student pilots conducting flight training over the town’s densely populated areas.

I encourage the pilot instructors to fly the students over more sparsely populated areas than the Cape.  There are such areas towards the interior.

If readers share my concerns, I suggest contacting the mayor’s office and/or their council member.
