A major winter storm is expected to impact parts of the North and Midwest this weekend, and it is already altering travel plans for people flying into Southwest Florida.

Travelers at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) are trying to get ahead of the storm. Flights are arriving steadily, and passengers are eager to trade snow for sunshine.

“I hope I get out before it starts,” said Eileen Meier, a traveler.

Many travelers are keeping a close watch on their flights, hoping to arrive in SWFL before the storm hits.

“We knew we were really lucky to be leaving today,” said Jean Rodgers, another traveler.

Arrivals at RSW on Friday show people flooding baggage claim as they flock to Southwest Florida to escape the impending winter weather.

“We got out of Cincinnati just in time. We are expecting eight to 12 inches of snow tomorrow,” said Rodgers.

“Escaping the cold, snowy, rainy weather that’s expected in Tennessee,” said Beverly Ogle, a traveler.

“I flew in from Denver, and it was snowing when I left this morning,” said Meier.

With thousands of flights already canceled, traveling by air or road across the storm’s path is expected to be very difficult this weekend.

“The airport was crazy, because everybody was moving their flights up, trying to get out before the big storm,” said Rodgers.

Ogle from Knoxville, Tennessee, changed her plans due to the forecast.

“I changed my mind when I heard about the snow this week and booked early this morning, so I would not be there when it happens. So absolutely, much better to be here,” said Ogle.

The weather in Southwest Florida is significantly warmer than what travelers left behind.

“I’m actually really hot. I need to take this jacket off,” said Rodgers.

The winter storm is anticipated to bring heavy snow and difficult travel conditions across parts of the Midwest and Northeast this weekend. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines as conditions continue to change.
